AVEC Board of Directors

Charlie Curtis (Alasuk), who lives in Kiana, is our board chairman. Charlie was first elected to the board in 1990 and served until 1991 when he resigned when he became president of the NANA Corporation. Charlie resigned from his NANA position a few years ago and was re-elected to the AVEC board in 2002.
Walter Sampson is the board vice chairman and was first elected to the board in 1989. Walter is originally from Noorvik but currently lives in Kotzebue where he works as a vice-president for the NANA Corporation.
Helena Jones , the board treasurer, lives in Ambler and is AVEC’s longest-serving board member, having first been elected in 1982. She has previously served as secretary.
Phyllis Clough of Old Harbor was first elected to the board in 2003 and elected board secretary in 2007. Phyllis is the daughter of the late Sven Haakanson, Sr., who also served on the AVEC board. Phyllis works at the Old Harbor School.
Robert Beans, is the former long-term board chair and former vice chairman and has served on the board since 1987. Robert is originally from Mt. Village but relocated to Wasilla to work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture until he retired.
Julia Walker of Anvik was re-elected to the board in March 2009. She previously served on the board for 15 years until 2007. She is an elementary school teacher.
Fred Sagoonick was elected to the board in 2007. Fred is the general manager of the Shaktoolik Native Corporation and previously served on the city council and as Mayor for two terms in the early 90s.
