Nunapitchuk

Nunapitchuk is located on the both banks of the Johnson River, 22 miles northwest of Bethel in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. It is an Eskimo village first listed in the 1939 U.S. Census with a population of 121. The community was incorporated as a second class city in 1969. During the 1970 U.S. Census, Nunapitchuk and the nearby villages of Atmautluak and Kasigluk were enumerated as "Akolmiut."

Community Facilities
- Well water is treated and supplies a central tap year-round. Major improvements are underway. A flush/haul system was recently installed in 31 homes in Nunapitchuk, with water delivery and tank hauling services. Construction continues on the remaining 64 homes.
- Unserved households haul their own water and honeybuckets. Sewage containers are located throughout the City, and are emptied into one of two new sewage lagoons (one on each side of the River).
- Electricity provided by AVEC through a new tieline from Kasigluk.

Economy
The school, local businesses and the City provide most employment in Nunapitchuk. Commercial fishing and subsistence activities are a focal point of the culture. 58 residents hold commercial fishing permits for salmon and herring roe net fisheries and roe on kelp. A State-owned 2,040' long by 60' wide gravel airstrip provides chartered or private air access year-round.
Culture and Activities
A federally-recognized tribe is located in the community -- the Native Village of Nunapitchuk (a.k.a. Akolmiut). Nunapitchuk is a Yup'ik Eskimo village, and residents are involved in commercial fishing and subsistence activities. The sale, importation or possession of alcohol is banned in the village. A new dock, small boat harbor, and seaplane landing area are available on the Johnson River. Snowmachines, ATVs and dog sleds are used in winter months. Winter trails exist to Atmautluak (7 mi.) and Akula Heights (2.5 mi.)
